No change in Constitution referendum schedule, says Attorney General Masaju
According to the AG, civic education on the proposed constitution
and campaigns will go together since opinion polls don’t restrict the
two to be jointly held.
Masaju said this when briefing journalists soon after his meeting
with editors of various media outlets in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
He said the registration exercise has already started and is
progressing well. He noted that the government considers the referendum
as an importance matter, insisting that copies of the proposed
constitution have started being distributed.
Masaju elaborated that the government will ensure that a good
number of copies is printed to facilitate smooth campaigns as public
will be able to read the documents and make decisions.
“You should trust the government, the time set for all these things
is enough,” he said adding that civic education will be provided by
National Electoral Commission (NEC).
He however said that copies of the proposed constitution are
available in the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs’ website.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Constitution and
Legal Affairs circulated to the media yesterday, at least 2,000,000
copies of the proposed draft have already started to be distributed both
in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
It said that, 1,800,000 copies are being distributed in the Mainland and 2,000,000 in the Isles.
The statement said by February 10 this year a total of 707,140 had
already been distributed in several regions of Tanzania Mainland,
Zanzibar is said to be completing the distribution any time from now.
The regions and the number of copies already distributed include
Katavi (15,640), Rukwa (27,040), Ruvuma (47,740), Mbeya (78,640), Simiyu
(34,840), Mara (52,540), Tabora (58,540) and Kigoma (41,440).
Other regions include Kagera (54,340), Geita (36,940), Mwanza
(57,040) and the Coast where so far Mafia District has received 2,400
copies.
Early September last year, the Chairman of the Constituent
Assembly (CA) Samwel Sitta handed over final draft of the proposed
Constitution for Tanzania to President Jakaya Kikwete and Zanzibar
President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein at the Jamuhuri Stadium in the country’s
capital, Dodoma.
Addressing CA members in Dodoma, the Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda
said the government is looking into the possibility of completing the
‘Katiba’ before President Kikwete’s second tenure ends.
“We have done a commendable job…it will be better if Tanzanians get
the new constitution before the President leaves the office,” he said.
He went on to call on ‘wananchi’ to accept the proposed Mother Law
saying it is geared at improving their social, political and economic
welfare.
He said the new document had considered groups such as small
miners, farmers, pastoralists and fishermen, elders, women and youth.
“With this proposed Constitution, Tanzanians are likely to attain
good economic progress by the year 2025,” Pinda said amid applause from
members.
